The perfusionist is knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and is responsible, in consultation with the physician, for selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used.  The perfusionist may be administratively responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment, assuring periodic maintenance of same, as well as for appropriate personnel and departmental management.  Management duties may include development and implementation of policies and procedures, quality assurance measures and staff development.  Education and research are a fundamental part of the perfusionist’s scope of practice.


1.         Participates in the implementation of the established plan of care that meets the needs of the patient.


2.         Maintains a professional demeanor with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information.


3.         Contributes to the cohesiveness of the department through teamwork, cooperation and positive behavior.


4.         Assures patient safety and comfort by proactively identifying potential hazards in the practice setting.


5.         Practices Universal Precautions to protect the patient and health care worker from exposure to blood borne pathogens.


6.         Practices departmental policies and procedures.


7.         Demonstrates competence in crisis and emergency situations.


8.         Makes recommendations regarding cost containment and practices cost efficiency.











1 - 2 years (recent) experience as a practicing clinical perfusionist .Consideration given

to previous experience in an intensive cardiovascular practice setting.






Graduate of an accredited perfusion training program.


Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.


Licensed by the state of Nebraska as a Perfusionist.  License must be held in the state services are provided.
