  • Provides pastoral care to patients and their families according to the Standards and Competencies for Professional Chaplains.          

  • Receives and responds to patient/family referrals from other members of the healthcare team.

  • Conducts assessments with patients to develop a pastoral plan of care, engages in stated interventions, and necessary evaluations.  Provides professional documentation as required by department.

  • Protects patient confidentiality always.

  • Provides pastoral consultation to employees, physicians, volunteers, and students when indicated.

  • Coordinates the ministry of prayer and appropriate rituals with patients, families, and staff, and partners with local church/congregation leaders whenever possible.  Provides services according to age specific needs, physical disabilities, and memory/behavioral impairment of patients.

  • Coordinates spiritual/pastoral ministry for those at the End of Life according to departmental protocol.

  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures and Standards of Care Practices for Pastoral Services.

  • Provides education for healthcare staff in the understanding of the spiritual dimension of healing.

  • Participates as a core member of the interdisciplinary team and exercises professional judgment in decision making.

  • Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth through participation in department meetings, in-service programs and continuing educational opportunities.

  • Demonstrates a positive, professional attitude with patients, families, visitors, and other personnel according to Standards of Practice and organizational commitments.

  • Participates in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.

  • Demonstrates work practices consistent with CHI Health and department-specific safety, security and infection control policies.

Past experience in a pastoral or ministry field preferred.  Experience in community based models of health care, incorporation of integrative therapies for healing and demonstrated success in facilitating comprehensive response plans for pastoral/spiritual care of person preferred.




Master’s Degree or equivalency in theology, behavioral science, ministry or related field.  Completion of one units of Clinical Pastoral Education.



Excellent interpersonal skills required.  Understanding of the grief process, crisis intervention and interpersonal dynamics required.  Ability to conduct assessments, document plan of care, provide services and evaluate patients’ spiritual needs required.  Good working skills and public speaking ability.  Job requires continuous reading skills, verbal and written communication skills including computer skills.
