Pharmacy Technician - 340 B Program Specialist - Full Time - Days

Position Summary:

Advanced Pharmacy Technician role that performs duties to ensure activities and regulatory tasks occur on a timely basis and meet appropriate/required guidelines; policies and procedures.  Maintains and optimizes the automated dispensing systems and temperature monitoring system. When requested, assists the pharmacist in the preparation of IV admixtures, filling medication requests, and maintaining pharmacy inventory. Accountable for 340B Program, ensuring compliance. Performs all duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  11. May serve in leadership and advisory role as assigned for the pharmacy technician group in areas of work processes and practices, training, schedules, performance standards, continuing education, competency validation, representation at appropriate meetings, and other areas as assigned.

  12. Coordinate the use of the automated drug distribution system for pharmacy such as database management, resetting of par and reorder levels, cabinet optimization, coordinating maintenance, service support liaison and other.

  13. Coordinate the use of the automated dispensing system and temperature monitoring system to assure proper system operation, alarm monitoring and reporting and other.

  14. Assist the pharmacist in filling medication orders, prescriptions, and pharmacy stock.

  15. Accurately prepare medications for the pharmacist to check, when appropriate, including appropriate auxiliary labels, in a timely manner.

  16. Assure that a pharmacist’s final check and signature documentation of all products has occurred when appropriate prior to their delivery.

  17. Attend promptly to the directives of the pharmacist and supervisory personnel.

  18. Accurately prepare sterile products in a timely manner, adhering to required aseptic technique at all times.

  19. Accurately select the appropriate drug product(s) required for the preparation of sterile products and assure that all necessary components are available for final check by the pharmacist.

  20. Promotes and supports positive and professional customer service, while interacting with clients, guests and team members.

  21. Works collaboratively with all members of the interdisciplinary team, other departments and disciplines to assure patients and customer’s needs are met in a timely manner.

  22. Encourages the active participation of the patient and/or family in goal setting and patient/family training/education.

  23. Provides positive and constructive feedback to enhance departmental operations.

  24. Completes all necessary documentation as outlined by departmental policy and documentation review. This includes, but is not limited to, patient care charting, charge entry, completing peer chart and peer reviews, and documenting on daily schedule.

  25. Utilizes available information management systems to support departmental and organizational goals. This includes utilization of e-mail, information announcements, policies, annual mandatories, charge entry, and accessing patient care related information.

  26. Shall be responsible for purchasing activities, medication and compliance audits or pharmacy analytics and informatics (i.e. running reports, managing electronic health record programs or managing automated dispensing cabinet functionality) as assigned.

  27. May perform clinical application file build and configuration.

  28. Analyzes identified system and technical problems and recommends solutions.

  29. Provide technical support in obtaining, verifying for accuracy, and recording initial medication histories from patients and/or their designated family/caregivers upon presentation to the Emergency Room and patient care areas.  Includes:

    1. Conducting patient and/or family interviews focused on obtaining current medication regimens including prescription and over-the-counter (non-prescription) medications, as well as vitamin and herbal supplements for dosing, frequency and indications.

    2. Able to clarify as many uncertainties as possible utilizing patient and family caregiver information, ambulatory pharmacy records, clinic records, long-term care facility records, and information from previous hospital encounters.

    3. Accurately listing the medication in the electronic medical record for review by a pharmacist. 

    4. Is responsible for relaying any issues that cannot be addressed by the technician to the pharmacist and/or physician

  30. Adheres to policies and procedures on 340B purchasing processes

  31. Follow systems and processes to limit program liabilities and provide proper audits to identify risk and prevent duplicate discounts and diversion.

  32. Participate in proactive educational programs provided to staff on policies and procedures and regulatory requirements related to inventory management and 340B procedures.

  33. Be involved in any and all 340B audits

  34. Perform audits on a scheduled basis; may involve presenting and resolving reconciliation issues as they arise during the monitoring and reconciliation process

  35. Ensure compliance with 340B program requirements for qualified patients, drugs, and locations.

  36. Develop reports that can be used to educate staff and assist management in tracking the overall financial impact to the organization. Build other reports, as appropriate, to monitor and improve 340B program compliance and performance.

  37. Manage drug selection, procurement, and inventory control.

    1. Maintain system databases to reflect changes in the drug formulary or product specifications

    2. Manage purchasing, receiving, and inventory control processes

  38. Monitor ordering processes, integrating the most current pricing from wholesalers.  Analyze invoices, shipping, and inventory processes.

  39. Performs all duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  40. Promotes department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

  41. Establishes/maintains effective and respectful communication in all collaborative relationships.

  42. Rotates weekend/call responsibilities in a professional and accountable fashion if applicable.

  43. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  44. Accountable for maintaining required certifications. 

  45. Performs other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level


High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) &

Direct Pharmacy Technician work experience (which met eligibility requirements for state licensure and/or certification through nationally recognized accredited agency.) OR

Completion of a nationally approved, accredited formal Pharmacy Technician training program



Registered Pharmacy Technician (CPHT) with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) &
BLS certification - through an approved AHA program &

*Completion of an ACPE approved 40 hour sterile products course

(must be completed within 60 days of date of hire &/or transfer into position)

****Additional Requirement for Critical Access Hospitals only:

Licensed in the State of Texas as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)


Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Working knowledge of 340B regulations




One (1) year or more experience in an acute care / hospital experience &

One (1) year or more experience with HRSA 340b program ordering and/or maintenance.

Trained in general use of pharmacy and wholesaler computers.


3 - 5 years or more experience in an acute care / hospital experience.

3 - 5 years or more experience with HRSA 340b program ordering and/or maintenance.
