Interpreter - Translator Spanish/English

Shift: PRN (available during the week and weekends)





The incumbent reports directly to Manager-Language Access.  The incumbent works collaboratively with:

-          clinical staff in all CHI Health settings

-          physicians

-          accounts payable staff

-          human resource staff

-          outside agencies as necessary




Provides medical interpretation for Non-English speaking patients and their family members either face-to-face, telephonically or electronically in all CHI Health settings during encounters with physicians, nurses, staff members and outside agencies. 

Provides high quality, accurate medical interpretation through the following:


  1. Maintains competency in medical interpretation through training, development and testing.
  2. Medical Interpreter training course such as "Bridging the Gap" required or equivalent, within 6 months of being employed.
  3. Prepares the setting for optimal medical interpreting by arranging the space and conducting pre-session with patients and staff.
  4. Demonstrates professionalism and adheres to the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics.
  5. Manages the flow of communication during the session.
  6. Maintains understanding of the United States medical culture as well as the cultures of the various Non-English speaking countries
  7. Quickly and effectively clarifies misunderstandings between clinical staff and patient.



Provides telephone or electronic interpretation as needed.


Communicates with LEP individuals who have questions about services at Alegent Health.


Provides interpreting services in the clinical and non-clinical areas, including scheduling of patients and accounts payable as needed.


Orally translates written materials from English to other Languages for patients and family members.  Materials to be translated may include, but not limited to, education materials, brochures, consent forms, medical reports and discharge instructions.


Experience:  Minimum requirements; prior medical interpreting and translating experience preferred.  Knowledge of the healthcare environment preferred.  Understanding of culture whose language is being interpreted desirable. 

Must agree to competency testing as requested by CHI Health.



Bachelor's degree in health related field or languages preferred. Must be at least 19 years of age. 


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must be able to speak, read and write both English and Language being interpreted fluently.  Excellent interpersonal skills required.  Must be able to work within a variety of healthcare settings and with various family and extended community gatherings.  Ability to set priorities in demanding situations and successfully communicate priorities and assist with problem solving to achieve results.  Good computer word processing and typing skills required.


Working Conditions: Works within all hospital and clinical settings.  Travel between locations required.  Frequent interruptions.  Job requires good hearing and clarity of speech.  Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods maintaining focused attention.  Required to carry a pager during working hours.
